Information on MembershipBENEFITSAtlantic Gallery is a professional organization of independent artists who own and operate a gallery strategically located in an attractive space at 548 West 28th Street, Suite 540 in Chelsea. Since its founding in 1974, Atlantic Gallery has had as its defining goals the promotion of art of the highest standards and the advancement of its members’ careers. Atlantic Gallery members work in a variety of styles and media and value experimentation. Membership in the gallery affords artists creative freedom and control over the content of their work. Pricing is determined by the artist as is the way the work is described in public relations and advertising. Atlantic Gallery artists direct and (pay for) the installation and publicity of their shows. Artists may also stage events such as poetry readings and book launches in conjunction with their shows.
In return for the investment of a one-time initiation fee, monthly maintenance payments, and participation in the gallery’s meetings and activities, members are guaranteed shows on a regular basis. Upon acceptance members pay an initiation fee and choose the size of their individual shows: half the gallery’s space or the entire gallery. The monthly maintenance fee for showing in the entire space is twice the fee for showing in half of the gallery. Please ask the Gallery Manager or President for information about the current fees. Monthly maintenance fees cover gallery rent and other common expenses. Maintenance payments can be made at the monthly meetings or sent directly to the Treasurer. Atlantic Members meet to conduct gallery business from 6:00 to 7:00pm on the second Monday of every month unless otherwise announced.
Members are assured inclusion in the themed and invitational group shows Atlantic Gallery presents several times a year. The exhibitions are often accompanied by public events such as: panel discussions, film nights, and performances.
Atlantic Gallery maintains a mailing list of more than 800 collectors and friends of the gallery. Each artist is given a page on the Atlantic Gallery website which is linked to the artist’s personal web site. All exhibitions are listed in Gallery Guide.
Members maintain their professional freedom--they are not limited to showing only with Atlantic Gallery.
The gallery’s commission is minimal in comparison to commercial galleries.
Sonni Burroughs, Atlantic’s Gallery Manager supervises the operation of the gallery every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. She also oversees receptions and special events. (Her fees are paid by the exhibiting artist or artists. In addition, artists may hire her to “sit” their shows on Fridays and Saturdays.) APPLICATION PROCESSArtists are invited to submit: • A brief artist’s statement and resume • 10 images of recent work in slide or CD (300dpi) format • 2 or 3 actual examples of work • Information sheet that includes the title, media, and size of each work • Necessary packing and postage for return of art if the artist cannot collect it personally. The application packet should be mailed to the attention of the President of Atlantic Gallery, Jeff Miller or given to the Gallery Manager, Sonni Burroughs.
Applicant’s submissions are reviewed by the members during the monthly meetings. Website links may not be substituted for the application packets. Artists are informed of the members’ decision by the gallery’s President. |
