Advantages of Membership

Atlantic Gallery is a professional organization of independent artists who own and run a gallery strategically located in an attractive space at 135 West 29th Street (Suite 601) in Chelsea.
Atlantic Gallery provides artists with opportunities to exhibit their work free of the constraints imposed by commercial galleries. Since its founding in 1974, Atlantic Gallery has had as its defining goals the promotion of art of the highest professional standards and the advancement of its members’ careers. In return for the investment of a one-time initiation fee, monthly maintenance payments, and participation in the gallery’s meetings and activities, members are guaranteed shows on a regular basis (every 18 to 24 months) along with the inspiring support of a community of dedicated and enterprising artists.

Financial Considerations

Atlantic Gallery takes only 10 percent commission on sales, substantially less than commercial galleries, which take 50 percent and sometimes more. As is currently the case for most New York galleries, the expenses of mounting a show are borne by the artist, but Atlantic artists can spend at their discretion and decide how best to direct their public relations campaign.

Creative Freedom

Atlantic Gallery Artists work in a broad variety of styles and media. The gallery encourages experimentation. Members have control over the style and content of their work, as well as its pricing, and how it is presented in public relations and advertising efforts. The shape of their shows and direction of their careers are in their own hands—they are not bound by the dictates of trends in the market. In addition, artists can extend their art by pairing their shows with other events such as poetry readings and book launches. Members maintain their professional freedom because they are not limited to showing only with Atlantic Gallery—they may pursue other ventures.

Additional Exposure

Every year Atlantic Gallery stages two themed and invitational group shows designed to highlight pressing social issues. The exhibitions are augmented by well-attended public events such as: panel discussions, film nights, and performances. Members are assured inclusion in these important curated shows. Atlantic also gives its members solo shows on a rotating basis in a highly visible satellite space in the West Village

Expanding Audience

Atlantic Gallery maintains a list of regularly updated press contacts and a mailing list of more than 800 collectors and friends of the gallery. Each artist is given a page on the Atlantic Gallery website which is linked to the artist’s personal web site. All exhibitions are listed in Gallery Guide.

Gallery Manager
