ABOUT ATLANTIC GALLERY
Atlantic Gallery is an artist’s cooperative
that has been in operation for 30 years. From its inception, the gallery
has exhibited work of high quality and intelligence in as many styles
and points of view as there are members. As a cooperative. Atlantic Gallery
gives its artists room to experiment and a guaranteed space to show regardless
of current fashions or market trends. It also provides contact with other
artists and the camaraderie that balances the often solitary activity
of making art.
The Gallery is collectively run by artists
who pay the operating costs with monthly dues & sales commissions.
Atlantic artists are given a solo exhibition approximately every 18-24
months, and can show in as many group exhibitions as the gallery has
each year. Members are responsible for the expense of their own exhibition,
but keep 90% of the earnings. A 10% commission goes to the gallery
for operating costs, supplies, web site maintenance, advertising or
future projects that will benefit Atlantic Gallery and its members.
WHY ATLANTIC?
Artists are well served by galleries that show work of high quality and
allow their artists to pursue their own vision. A cooperative gallery,
like Atlantic, exhibits artists on regular basis offering venue in
fair exchange for the artists' efforts on behalf of the gallery. At
Atlantic Gallery you will find a supportive circle of working artists.
Artists have long paid for the mounting,
framing & presentation
of artwork. Increasingly, artists are asked to pay expenses of the exhibition
itself. Even at commercial galleries, part or all of the printing costs
for the invitations, catalogue and even the refreshments served have
become the artists’ financial responsibility. A cooperative gallery,
like Atlantic takes only 10% of the sale of artwork, making the profit
margin for each shows much greater for the artist.
Atlantic Gallery maintains a mailing list
of buyers, visitors, and other contacts of an excess of 1000 names.
Many of our members maintain their own lists, as well. The gallery
also has available a list of press contacts to promote exhibitions.
Because reviewers are overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of artists,
openings and events in a city where the art scene is broadcast over
all five boroughs creative marketing is a must. Atlantic artists focus
first on exhibiting excellent work, but also develop new and inventive
ways of bringing new visitors to the gallery.
ARTISTS INTERESTED IN JOINING THE GALLERY are invited to submit a brief
statement about their work and artist history along with 10 slides of
current work along with two or three actual examples. Submissions are
projected and reviewed by the artist members during the Monthly Meeting.
The gallery prefers slide format to CD. Please mark slides with an arrow
indicating direction in which the artwork is to be viewed. Please also
include the necessary packing and postage for return of artwork.
INITIATION FEE:
Upon acceptance there is a one-time initiation
fee of $750. DUES are currently $150 a month. Members can exhibit up
to three times a year in AG group shows and are given a solo show in
half the gallery every 18-24 months. Those members wishing to exhibit
in the whole gallery pay twice the monthly dues. Dues can be paid at
the meeting or sent directly to the Treasurer.
MONTHLY MEETINGS: Atlantic Members meet the first Monday of each month,
unless otherwise announced. The meeting officially begins at 6:15 and
generally by at 7:30. During this meeting we discuss gallery business,
vote on issues, review applications for membership, and consider future
projects.
