This is an exhibition of large, narrative oils painted in the New Old Master style. Gouache studies of people are also on view. Oberst’s subjects frequently make eye contact with the viewer as they pause in sometimes disquieting moments from daily life. Mystery and complexity underlie the simplest of gestures.
