William Oberst is a figurative oil painter using old-master techniques to depict people in contemporary situations. He is especially interested in so-called constants of human nature that reappear throughout the history of art—e.g. love between men and women, and the bond between mother and child—and how they might best be portrayed in twenty-first-century paintings.

 

Oberst earned an M.F.A. in painting from Stony Brook University and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Claremont Graduate University. He taught painting and drawing at Stony Brook for more than a decade and is the recipient of many awards, including the university’s Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 2002.
